Shree Bal Jyoti Basic School, Lahape
|
The project site, Bangalachuli Rural Municipality, Ward No. 7, Lahape, lies in the northern part of Deukhuri Valley within Dang District, Lumbini Province, approximately 430 kilometers from Kathmandu. The catchment area of the project is home to 195 households, comprising a total population of 1,097 individuals. The inhabitants represent a diverse mix of ethnic groups, primarily Magar and Dalit communities.
Shree Bal Jyoti Basic School, established in 1968, serves as an educational hub for children from kindergarten to grade 8. It is situated in Lahape village, Ward No. 7, of Bangalachuli Rural Municipality, approximately 430 kilometers from Kathmandu. The school has a total enrollment of 237 students, including 126 boys and 111 girls. A team of 11 teachers and one school helper, all supported by the Nepalese government, is dedicated to delivering quality education. Students come from neighboring communities such as Gharichaur, Lahape, Shirukharka, Dohate, Sugurpokhari, Aapdada, Koirale, and Gasikochap. Some children walk up to an hour and a half each way to attend classes.
The existing educational environment of the school is far from child-friendly. Out of the five school buildings, four are old and in poor condition. Only the fifth building, a reinforced concrete (RCC) structure with six rooms, is in good condition. Despite their structural damages, three of the old buildings are still in use due to a lack of alternatives, while one is entirely unfit for use. Although there is access to drinking water, the school lacks a proper drinking water system. The facility includes two toilet structures, comprising a total of four rooms. However, one of the structures, which has two rooms, is currently unusable. The compound is also unfenced, compromising the overall safety and security of the premises.
Beyond the weak and insufficient infrastructure, the school lacks adequate furniture and educational materials, limiting learning to the government curriculum. Low community awareness about the value of education and irregular communication between teachers and parents highlight the need for a collaborative effort among the school management committee, teachers, parents, and the wider community to foster a sustainable and improved educational environment.
The proposed project aims to enhance school infrastructure while improving the educational environment and fostering community development. It will actively involve existing male and female community groups, leveraging their participation as a cornerstone for long-term sustainability. This collaborative approach ensures that the community takes ownership of the project, promoting lasting improvements in educational access and quality within the village.
Specific Objectives
